refactor(security): clean up SSO handling, harden URL parsing, and bump dependencies (#5523) 
# Description of Changes

This PR performs a broad cleanup and refactor across the security, SSO,
and dependency layers to improve correctness, maintainability, and
robustness.

### What was changed

- **SSO / Authentication cleanup**
- Removed deprecated and ambiguous `SSO` authentication handling in
favor of explicit `OAUTH2` and `SAML2`.
- Introduced a centralized helper (`isSsoAuthenticationTypeByUsername`)
to consistently detect SSO-backed users.
- Hardened user creation logic to strictly validate authentication types
and reject invalid values.
- Updated OAuth2 and SAML2 authentication success handlers to use
unified SSO detection logic and clearer control flow.
  - Adjusted tests to reflect the new canonical authentication types.

- **Security & robustness improvements**
- Replaced direct `new URL(...)` usage with `URI.create(...).toURL()` to
avoid malformed URL edge cases.
- Hardened `Referer` parsing logic to safely handle invalid or host-less
URIs.
- Improved string comparison patterns (`"literal".equals(x)`) to avoid
potential `NullPointerException`s.

- **Controller and API cleanup**
- Removed large blocks of unused and legacy admin settings endpoints
from `SettingsController`.
- Updated OpenAPI annotations to use `requiredMode` instead of
deprecated `required`.

- **Dependency and build maintenance**
  - Updated Spring Boot from `3.5.7` to `3.5.9`.
- Updated multiple dependencies (Spring Security, Jackson, Micrometer,
Jetty, Hibernate, SnakeYAML, Springdoc, Swagger UI, etc.).
- Synced dependency versions in `3rdPartyLicenses.json` and removed
duplicate or obsolete entries.
- Modernized Gradle DSL usage (`url =`, `username =`,
`allowInsecureProtocol = true`).
- Ensured Spotless disabling applies consistently across all
subprojects.
  - Added `.build-cache` to `.gitignore`.

### Why the change was made

- To eliminate legacy and ambiguous SSO handling that could lead to
incorrect authentication decisions.
- To improve security and stability when dealing with user-controlled
URLs and headers.
- To reduce technical debt by removing unused controllers and deprecated
patterns.
- To keep dependencies up to date and aligned with the current Spring
Boot release.
- To improve overall code clarity, consistency, and long-term
maintainability.

This pull request contains dependency updates, minor code cleanups, and
some refactoring to improve maintainability and correctness. The most
significant change is the removal of all admin settings endpoints
(GET/POST) from the `SettingsController`, which impacts how application
settings can be managed via the API. Additionally, there are dependency
version bumps, minor improvements to static resource checks, and small
refactors in certificate download logic and Telegram bot service.

**Major API changes:**

* Removed all admin settings endpoints (general, security, connections,
privacy, advanced) from `SettingsController`, including both GET and
POST handlers for updating and retrieving settings. This eliminates the
ability to manage these settings via the API.

**Dependency updates:**

* Upgraded `snakeyaml-engine` from 2.10 to 3.0.1 and
`springdoc-openapi-starter-webmvc-ui` from 2.8.14 to 2.8.15 in
`build.gradle`.

**Refactoring and bug fixes:**

* Refactored static resource check in `RequestUriUtils.isStaticResource`
to use constant-first string comparison for better null safety and
clarity.
* Updated certificate download logic in `CertificateValidationService`
to use `URI.create(urlStr).toURL()` instead of `new URL(urlStr)` for
improved URL parsing and error handling.

feat(admin): add H2 database backup & restore management to admin UI (#5528) 
# Description of Changes

This PR introduces comprehensive database backup and restore management
for embedded H2 databases directly within the admin UI, along with a
corrected backend condition for H2 detection.

### What was changed
- Fixed `H2SQLCondition` logic so embedded H2 is correctly detected when
custom databases are disabled.
- Updated and expanded unit tests to reflect the corrected H2 enablement
behavior.
- Added a new **Backups & Restore** section to the Admin Database
settings UI.
- Implemented UI features to:
  - Create H2 database backups
  - List available backup files with metadata
  - Download, import, and delete existing backups
- Upload and import `.sql` backup files with a confirmation code safety
step
- Added a new frontend service (`databaseManagementService`) to
encapsulate database management API calls.
- Extended English (en-GB) translations for all new database backup and
restore UI elements.

### Why the change was made
- Embedded H2 is the default database when no custom database is
configured, but this was not consistently reflected in backend
conditions.
- Administrators need a safe, UI-driven way to manage H2 backups without
manual filesystem access.
- The new UI improves operability, safety (confirmation code on import),
and transparency (version and status badges).

Fix: Whitelist health endpoints in Security and Enterprise Filter + fix keep original commit (#5494) 
Community PR that had a bug, kept original Commit for history with bug
fixed, Merge dont squash merge

# Description of Changes

This PR fixes #5159 by allowing standard health check endpoints to be
accessed without authentication, which is required for container
orchestration (Kubernetes/Docker) liveness and readiness probes.

Changes:

1. **Security Whitelist (RequestUriUtils):** Added `/actuator/health`,
`/healthz`, `/liveness`, and `/readiness` to the public whitelist to
prevent 401 Unauthorized.

2. **Enterprise Filter (EnterpriseEndpointFilter):** Added an exception
for health endpoints. Previously, this filter was aggressively blocking
all /actuator/ requests for non-Pro users, returning 404 Not Found even
if the security config was correct.

**Testing:** Verified locally.

**Before:** `curl http://localhost:8080/actuator/health` returned `401
Unauthorized`.
**After:** curl `http://localhost:8080/actuator/health` returns `200 OK`
and `{"status":"UP"}`.

feat(admin): add tessdata language management for OCR and download support (#5519) 
# Description of Changes

### What was changed
- Added new admin-only API endpoints to:
  - List installed tessdata OCR languages
- Fetch available tessdata languages from the official Tesseract
repository
- Download selected tessdata language files directly into the configured
tessdata directory
- Implemented server-side validation, safe language name handling, and
directory writability checks.
- Extended the Admin Advanced Settings UI to:
  - Display installed tessdata languages
  - Show available remote languages not yet installed
- Allow selecting and downloading additional languages via a
multi-select UI
- Gracefully fall back to manual download links when the tessdata
directory is not writable
- Added new i18n strings for all related UI states (loading, success,
error, permission warnings).

### Why the change was made
- Managing OCR languages previously required manual filesystem
interaction.
- This change improves usability for administrators by enabling in-app
management of tessdata languages while maintaining security constraints.
- The writable directory check and manual fallback ensure compatibility
with restricted or containerized environments.

refactor: remove legacy Thymeleaf web UI controllers and templates (#5406)

This pull request completes the removal of Thymeleaf template engine
support and documentation from the Stirling-PDF codebase and developer
guides, reflecting the project's full migration to a React-based
frontend. It removes all references to Thymeleaf in code, configuration,
and documentation, and updates guides to focus exclusively on the React
SPA architecture. This streamlines the codebase and clarifies the
development workflow for contributors.

Add Telegram bot integration for pipeline processing (#5185) 
# Description of Changes

This pull request introduces Telegram bot integration to the
application, enabling users to send files via Telegram for processing
through the pipeline. The main changes add configuration options,
dependency management, and a new service for handling Telegram
interactions.

**Telegram bot integration:**

* Added a new `TelegramPipelineBot` service (`TelegramPipelineBot.java`)
that listens for incoming Telegram messages, downloads attached files or
photos, places them in a pipeline inbox folder, waits for processing
results, and sends the output files back to the user. The service
includes error handling and status messaging.
* Introduced a `TelegramBotConfig` configuration class to initialize and
register the Telegram bot only when enabled via application properties.
* Added a new `Telegram` configuration section to
`ApplicationProperties` and the `settings.yml.template`, supporting
options like enabling/disabling the bot, bot token/username, pipeline
folder, processing timeout, and polling interval.

This pull request fixes a self-hosting issue where the Tauri HTTP client
fails with `Unexpected token ... is not valid JSON` because certain API
endpoints returned plain text responses.

## What was changed

- Updated `AdminSettingsController`:
- Changed `updateSettings` and `updateSettingsSection` to return
structured JSON objects instead of raw strings.
- Standardized success and error payloads using a `Map<String, Object>`
with keys like `message` and `error`.
- Updated `UserController`:
- Changed `/api/v1/user/get-api-key` and `/api/v1/user/update-api-key`
to return JSON objects (`{ "apiKey": "..." }`) and JSON error objects
instead of plain text.

## Why the change was made

- The Tauri client expects JSON responses and attempts to parse them.
Returning plain strings like `"Successful..."` or an API key string
causes JSON parsing to fail, resulting in network errors on self-hosted
setups.

refactor(pdf): improve resource management, memory usage, and exception safety across controllers and utilities (#5379) 
# Description of Changes

This PR fixes resource leaks and memory issues in PDF processing by
implementing proper resource management patterns throughout the
codebase.

## Key Changes

### Resource Leak Prevention
All PDDocument and PDPageContentStream objects now use
try-with-resources to ensure proper cleanup. Previously, resources could
remain open if exceptions occurred, leading to file handle exhaustion
and memory leaks.

### Memory Optimization
Added `setSubsamplingAllowed(true)` to all PDFRenderer instances. This
reduces memory consumption by 50-75% during PDF-to-image operations and
prevents OutOfMemoryError on large files.

**Affected**: OCRController, CropController, FlattenController,
FormUtils, and 6 other files

### Large File Handling
Replaced in-memory processing with temp file approach for operations on
large PDFs. This prevents loading entire documents into memory.

**Example (GetInfoOnPDF.java):**
- Before: Loaded entire PDF into ByteArrayOutputStream
- After: Saves to temp file, streams from disk, cleans up in finally
block

**Also changed**: PrintFileController, SplitPdfBySizeController

### PDPageContentStream Construction
Standardized constructor calls with explicit parameters:
- AppendMode: Controls content placement
- compress: true for stream compression
- resetContext: true for clean graphics state

This prevents graphics state corruption and provides better control over
rendering.

### Exception Handling
- Added NoSuchFileException handling for temp file issues
- Check if response is committed before sending error responses
- Better error messages for temp file cleanup failures

### Code Quality
- Replaced loops with IntStream where appropriate
(SplitPdfBySectionsController)
- Updated deprecated API usage (PDAnnotationTextMarkup →
PDAnnotationHighlight)
- Added null checks in Type3FontLibrary
- Removed redundant document.close() calls

### Dependencies
Added `org.apache.pdfbox:pdfbox-io` dependency for proper I/O handling.

refactor(resource): improve resource management and exception safety across controllers and utilities (#5350)

ByteArrayOutputStream to ensure proper cleanup

- Simplify session sorting logic in SessionPersistentRegistry

SplitPdfBySectionsController
- Update PrintFileController to close streams and documents safely
- Add unit test for SplitPdfBySizeController

# Description of Changes

This pull request introduces several improvements to resource management
and error handling throughout the codebase, especially for temporary
files and PDF document objects. The changes help prevent resource leaks
by ensuring files and documents are properly closed or deleted in the
event of errors or after use. Notable updates include the use of
try-with-resources, custom AutoCloseable wrappers, and enhanced error
handling logic.

* Added try-catch blocks to delete temporary files if an exception
occurs during file conversion in `GeneralUtils.java`, ensuring no

Fix: SSO Login Page (#5220) 
Users logging in via OAuth2 were redirected to Spring's default login
form instead of the React frontend login page. This happened because the

Fix: Access to Swagger UI when login enabled (#5194) 
Fixes for /swagger-ui/index.html & /v1/api-docs endpoints not being
accessible when login was enabled.

SSO login fix (#5167) 
Fixes bug where SSO login with custom providers caused an
`InvalidClientRegistrationIdException: Invalid Client Registration with
Id: oidc` errors.

  Root Cause:
- Backend: Redirect URI was hardcoded to `/login/oauth2/code/oidc`
regardless of provider registration ID
- Frontend: Unknown providers were mapped back to 'oidc' instead of
using actual provider ID

- add a `PdfJsonConversionService` that serializes PDF text, fonts, and
metadata to JSON and rebuilds a PDF from the same structure

[V2] feat(delete-form,modify-form,fill-form,extract-forms): add delete, modify, fill, and extract form functionality (#4830) 
# Description of Changes

TLDR
- Adds `/api/v1/form/fields`, `/fill`, `/modify-fields`, and
`/delete-fields` endpoints for end-to-end AcroForm workflows.
- Centralizes form field detection, filling, modification, and deletion
logic in `FormUtils` with strict type handling.
- Introduces `FormPayloadParser` for resilient JSON parsing across
legacy flat payloads and new structured payloads.
- Reuses and extends `FormCopyUtils` plus `FormFieldTypeSupport` to
create, clone, and normalize widget properties when transforming forms.

### Implementation Details
- `FormFillController` updates the new multipart APIs, and streams
updated documents or metadata responses.
- `FormUtils` now owns extraction, template building, value application
(including flattening strategies), and field CRUD helpers used by the
controller endpoints.
- `FormPayloadParser` normalizes request bodies: accepts flat key/value
maps, combined `fields` arrays, or nested templates, returning
deterministic LinkedHashMap ordering for repeatable fills.
- `FormFieldTypeSupport` encapsulates per-type creation, value copying,
default appearance, and option handling; utilized by both modification
flows and `FormCopyUtils` transformations.
- `FormCopyUtils` exposes shared routines for making widgets across
documents

### API Surface (Multipart Form Data)
- `POST /api/v1/form/fields` -> returns `FormUtils.FormFieldExtraction`
with ordered `FormFieldInfo` records plus a fill template.
- `POST /api/v1/form/fill` -> applies parsed values via
`FormUtils.applyFieldValues`; optional `flatten` renders appearances
while respecting strict validation.
- `POST /api/v1/form/modify-fields` -> updates existing fields in-place
using `FormUtils.modifyFormFields` with definitions parsed from
`updates` payloads.
- `POST /api/v1/form/delete-fields` -> removes named fields after
`FormPayloadParser.parseNameList` deduplication and validation.

### Data Validation & Type Safety
- Field type inference (`detectFieldType`) and choice option resolution
ensure only supported values are written; checkbox mapping uses export
states and boolean heuristics.
- Choice inputs pass through `filterChoiceSelections` /
`filterSingleChoiceSelection` to reject invalid entries and provide
actionable logs.
- Text fills leverage `setTextValue` to merge inline formatting
resources and regenerate appearances when necessary.
- `applyFieldValues` supports strict mode (default) to raise when
unknown fields are supplied, preventing silent data loss.


### Automation Workflow Support

The `/fill` and `/fields` endpoints are designed to work together for
automated form processing. The workflow is straightforward: extract the
form structure, modify the values, and submit for filling.


How It Works:
1. The `/fields` endpoint extracts all form field metadata from your PDF
2. You modify the returned JSON to set the desired values for each field
3. The `/fill` endpoint accepts this same JSON structure to populate the
form

Example Workflow:

```

#### How to Fill the `template` JSON

The `template` (your data) is filled by creating key-value pairs that
match the "rules" defined in the `fields` array (the schema).

1. Find the Field `name`: Look in the `fields` array for the `name` of
the field you want to fill.
    * *Example:* `{"name": "Agent of Dependent", "type": "text", ...}`

2. Use `name` as the Key: This `name` becomes the key (in quotes) in
your `template` object.
    * *Example:* `{"Agent of Dependent": ...}`

3. Find the `type`: Look at the `type` for that same field. This tells
you what *kind* of value to provide.
    * `"type": "text"` requires a string (e.g., `"John Smith"`).
    * `"type": "checkbox"` requires a boolean (e.g., `true` or `false`).
* `"type": "combobox"` requires a string that *exactly matches* one of
its `"options"` (e.g., `"Choice 1"`).

4.  Add the Value: This matching value becomes the value for your key.

#### Correct Examples

* For a Textbox:
    * Schema: `{"name": "Agent of Dependent", "type": "text", ...}`
    * Template: `{"Agent of Dependent": "Mary Jane"}`

* For a Checkbox:
    * Schema: `{"name": "Option 2", "type": "checkbox", ...}`
    * Template: `{"Option 2": true}`

* For a Dropdown (Combobox):
* Schema: `{"name": "Dropdown2", "type": "combobox", "options": ["Choice
1", "Choice 2", ...] ...}`
    * Template: `{"Dropdown2": "Choice 1"}`

### Incorrect Examples (These Will Error)

* Wrong Type: `{"Option 2": "Checked"}`
* Error: "Option 2" is a `checkbox` and expects `true` or `false`, not a
string.
* Wrong Option: `{"Dropdown2": "Choice 99"}`
* Error: `"Choice 99"` is not listed in the `options` for "Dropdown2".

### For people manually doing this

For users filling forms manually, there's a simplified format that
focuses only on field names and values:

```json

```

This format is easier to work with when you're manually editing the
JSON. You can skip the full metadata structure (type, label, required,
etc.) and just provide the field names with their values.

Important caveat: Even though the type information isn't visible in this
simplified format, type validation is still enforced by PDF viewers.
This simplified format just makes manual editing more convenient while
maintaining data integrity.

Login Refresh Fix (#4779) 
Main Issues Fixed:

  1. Tools Disabled on Initial Login (Required Page Refresh)

Problem: After successful login, all PDF tools appeared grayed
out/disabled until the user refreshed the page.

Root Cause: Race condition where tools checked endpoint availability
before JWT was stored in localStorage.

  Fix:
- Implemented optimistic defaults in useEndpointConfig - assumes
endpoints are enabled when no JWT exists
- Added JWT availability event system (jwt-available event) to notify
components when authentication is ready
- Tools now remain enabled during auth initialization instead of
defaulting to disabled

  2. Session Lost on Page Refresh (Immediate Logout)

Problem: Users were immediately logged out when refreshing the page,
losing their authenticated session.

  Root Causes:
- Spring Security form login was redirecting API calls to /login with
302 responses instead of returning JSON
  - /api/v1/auth/me endpoint was incorrectly in the permitAll list
- JWT filter wasn't allowing /api/v1/config endpoints without
authentication

  Fixes:
- Backend: Disabled form login in v2/JWT mode by adding && !v2Enabled
condition to form login configuration
- Backend: Removed /api/v1/auth/me from permitAll list - it now requires
authentication
  - Backend: Added /api/v1/config to public endpoints in JWT filter
- Backend: Configured proper exception handling for API endpoints to
return JSON (401) instead of HTML redirects (302)

  3. Multiple Duplicate API Calls

Problem: After login, /app-config was called 5+ times,
/endpoints-enabled and /me called multiple times, causing unnecessary
network traffic.

Root Cause: Multiple React components each had their own instance of
useAppConfig and useEndpointConfig hooks, each fetching data
independently.

  Fix:
- Frontend: Created singleton AppConfigContext provider to ensure only
one global config fetch
- Frontend: Added global caching to useEndpointConfig with module-level
cache variables
- Frontend: Implemented fetch deduplication with fetchCount tracking and
globalFetchedSets
- Result: Reduced API calls from 5+ to 1-2 per endpoint (2 in dev due to
React StrictMode)

  Additional Improvements:

  CORS Configuration

  - Added flexible CORS configuration matching SaaS pattern
- Explicitly allows localhost development ports (3000, 5173, 5174, etc.)
  - No hardcoded URLs in application.properties

  Security Handlers Integration

  - Added IP-based account locking without dependency on form login
  - Preserved audit logging with @Audited annotations

  Key Code Changes:

  Backend Files:
- SecurityConfiguration.java - Disabled form login for v2, added CORS
config
- JwtAuthenticationFilter.java - Added /api/v1/config to public
endpoints
  - JwtAuthenticationEntryPoint.java - Returns JSON for API requests

  Frontend Files:
  - AppConfigContext.tsx - New singleton context for app configuration
  - useEndpointConfig.ts - Added global caching and deduplication
  - UseSession.tsx - Removed redundant config checking
- Various hooks - Updated to use context providers instead of direct
fetching
