Accepts the new impact metrics into the singleton registry and then does
nothing with them. If the relevant flag is off, the metrics are stripped
from the existing metrics data format and dropped on the floor
As part of the task to make it possible to send notifications to
approvers for a CR, this PR adds a table that can link users to CRs
they've been requested to make an approval for.
Migrate from make-fetch-happen to ky
## Summary:
- Replaced all usages of make-fetch-happen with
[ky](https://github.com/sindresorhus/ky) for HTTP requests.
- Upgraded nock to v14 so it's capable of mocking native fetch
implementation
- Removed the make-fetch-happen dependency
- Ensured all fetch logic is compatible with ky API.
## Why:
- ky provides a modern, lightweight, and promise-based HTTP client with
a simpler API.
- Reduces dependencies and simplifies codebase.
## Testing:
We'll do testing in sandbox environment of the modified functionality
(which is not much) and we also rely on automated testing.

#10121 points out that we're using md5 functions still. This PR updates
our migrations to no longer use md5 at all (so if you haven't run the
migrations, you won't get email hashes until you get to the included
migration with this PR). If you've already run the migrations, we'll
drop the existing `email_hash varchar(32)` column and replace it with a
`email_hash TEXT` column.
We're also replacing the md5 function with `encode(sha256(email),
'hex')`. encode has been supported since PG10, sha256 came with PG11.
Do we want an index on the email_hash? I wasn't sure, but if we want to
do lookup we probably should have an index on it (though not a unique
one)
Made a few QoL improvements:
- Don't use default export for class
- Move users store to a feature package (didn't move the interface as it
might be referenced elsewhere)
- Add types for query builders (and ts-expect-error when needed)
Removes all usages of flag addEditStrategy and refactors code where
necessary.
This is only the first step of the cleanup. After this, there's still
lots of code to be removed. I've got a different PR that removes ~5k
lines of code (https://github.com/Unleash/unleash/pull/10105) that I
want to reach in pieces to make sure that everythnig works on the way
there.
Adds caching via localstorage to the flag creation form, so that if you
(accidentally) close the form before submitting it, you'll retain (most)
of the same data when you reopen it.
Specifically, we'll store:
- name
- description
- type
- tags
- impression data
We can't store the project as it is now, because it gets overridden by
whatever is in the URL. However, this is probably a good thing. It means
that if you navigate to a different project and open the feature
creation form there, it'll retain everything from the last one, but
it'll use the current project.
The stored data is cleared when you successfully create a feature, so
that you don't get dangling data.
The data is also stored in a shared cache for all projects, so that you
don't have different caches per project.
The behavior of seeding the form is hidden behind a flag (that doesn't
exist yet). We'll still read and write to the cache if the flag is off,
but we won't use it to populate the feature form, so it has no
discernible impact on the user.
## Bug detected 🐛 ... and squashed
Working on this, I came to realize that there was a bug in how the
config button and use feature form hooks interacted. We (in this case
probably me) have assumed that it's fine to use a set for any option
checking in the config buttons. Also, we're using a set to store tags in
the feature form. But objects aren't compared by value in JS, so the set
will happily accept multiple instances of the same tag. Likewise, these
tags won't show up as selected in the dropdown because when the dropdown
checks if the set `has` the value, it's using reference equality.
To get around this, I have normalized the values of the Tags set to
strings (`<type>:<value>`), which are easily comparable.
We can iterate on this later if we need to.
## `useLocalStorageState`
In doing this, I have also made a change to the useLocalStorageState
hook:
the exposed "setState" function now writes to the localstorage
immediately. This is because the useEffect method might not have time to
save the data if the component unmounts (this was the case with the flag
dialog).
However, I have kept the useEffect because it gets run on component
mount and then only when it changes. This means that we will get double
saves to localstorage, but it'll be with the same data, so it's benign.
I've tried out two other uses of the hook (event timeline props and
environment columns in the project flags table) and see no discernible
difference in behavior.
## `useFeatureForm`
I have also made a change to the useFeatureForm hook and removed a
`useEffect` that would reset the name to whatever you passed in as the
initial name if you cleared it out. This essentially meant that you
couldn't clear the name completely, because it would just refill with
the initial name.
As far as I can tell, there is no need to have this sticking around
anymore. The hook is only used in two places: the flag creation dialog
and the flag edit page. The flag edit page doesn't allow you to change
the name anyway and it was causing issues in the dialog. It's likely a
holdover from the way something worked 3 years ago. Both the dialog and
the edit screen seem to work just fine with this change.
I have also changed the function parameters from ordered parameters to
an object. There's so many of them that even you don't think it's a good
idea to use objects when you have multiple params with the same type,
it's just nigh-impossible to remember the order by now.
## Minor changes
Additionally, I came across three issues that were causing react errors,
and have fixed them.
1. we'd forgotten to interpolate a variable and just used the variable
name in a string instead
2. an html attribute that doesn't exist (`aria-role` instead of `role`)
3. Providing a disabled button inside a tooltip. I've seen this one
around for ages and it prevented tooltips from working on disabled
buttons. The solution was wrapping it in a span.
**BREAKING CHANGE**: DEFAULT_ENV changed from `default` (should not be
used anymore) to `development`
## About the changes
- Only delete default env if the install is fresh new.
- Consider development the new default. The main consequence of this
change is that the default is no longer considered `type=production`
environment but also for frontend tokens due to this assumption:

(I believe this is mostly due to the [support for admin
tokens](https://github.com/Unleash/unleash/pull/10080#discussion_r2126871567))
- `feature_toggle_update_total` metric reports `n/a` in environment and

BREAKING CHANGE: As part of the preparation for a new major (7.0) this
removes /api/admin/projects/{projectId} endpoint. It has been deprecated
since 5.8, and we don't use it anymore in our frontend.
This removes a strategy that was already deprecated, but only for new
installations.
I tested starting with an installation with this strategy being used and
then updating, and I was still able to edit the strategy, so this should
not impact current users.
On a fresh install the strategy is no longer available.

BREAKING CHANGE: This removes the

Users should move to environment or strategy specific variant methods
rather than feature level variant methods.
Adding a single table to capture all lifecycle trends data.
One field presents a challenge: `median_time_in_stage_days`. This value
is calculated per `stage`, not per `flag_type`. As a result, we would
need to duplicate the total median time across each flag type. This
isn’t a major issue.
An alternative would be to create a separate table solely for the median
values, but that seems like overkill.
If there are two concurrent requests to create or edit change requests,
two separate ones may be created in parallel. The UI does not currently
handle this scenario, and if additional changes are made, they might be
added to a random existing change request—resulting in a messy and
unpredictable state.

Blocks deletion of context fields that are in use and updates the
"active usage" count to exclude use in archived flags.
- Before allowing you to delete a context field, checks if it is in use
by any strategies. If so, returns a 409 error.
- Updates what we count as "in use" to exclude flags that have been
archived.
BREAKING CHANGE: Context fields can no longer be deleted if they are in
use by active (non-archived) flags.

We're removing the `filterExistingFlagNames` feature flag since we've
decided we want this to be the default behavior.
We don't need to rush to merge it, just in case we need to disable this
for any reason. However it should also be pretty easy to just revert if
needed.
Changes in tests are a bit tricky since they assumed the previous
behavior where we always registered metrics, even for non existing flag
names. `cachedFeatureNames` is also memoized with a TTL of 10s, so the
easiest way to overcome this was to override `cachedFeatureNames` to
return what we expected. As long as they return the same flag names that
we expect, we're able to register their metrics.
Let me know if you can think of a better approach.
Improves handling of constraints in use that have been deleted.
This change implments a few small changes on both the front and the back
end on how we deal with constraints that have been deleted.
The most important change is on the back end, in the
`/constraints/validate` endpoint. We used to throw here if the
constraint couldn't be found, but the only reason we wanted to look for
the constraint in the db was to check for legal values. Now, instead,
we'll allow you to pass a constraint field that doesn't exist in the
database. We'll still check the values against the operator for
validity, we just don't control legal values anymore (because there
aren't any).
On the front end, we improve the handling by showing the deleted context
filed in the dropdown, both when the selector dropdown is closed and
when it is open. However, if you change the context field, we remove the
deleted field from the list. This seems like a sensible tradeoff. Means
you can't select it if you've deselected it.
We're migrating to ESM, which will allow us to import the latest
versions of our dependencies.

This PR introduces a suggestion for a “unknown flags” feature.
When clients report metrics for flags that don’t exist in Unleash (e.g.
due to typos), we now track a limited set of these unknown flag names
along with the appnames that reported them. The goal is to help users
identify and clean up incorrect flag usage across their apps.
We store up to 10 unknown flag + appName combinations, keeping only the
most recent reports. Data is collected in-memory and flushed
periodically to the DB, with deduplication and merging to ensure we
don’t exceed the cap even across pods.
We were especially careful to make this implementation defensive, as
unknown flags could be reported in very high volumes. Writes are
batched, deduplicated, and hard-capped to avoid DB pressure.
No UI has been added yet — this is backend-only for now and intended as
a step toward better visibility into client misconfigurations.
I would suggest starting with a simple banner that opens a dialog
showing the list of unknown flags and which apps reported them.

## About the changes
Initially at Unleash we started using `process.nextTick` inside
constructors to delay initialization of services.
Later we stared using a pattern where we instantiate services multiple
times.
The problem is the first pattern implies we have singleton services,
while the second pattern breaks the singleton.
There are reasons for both patterns, but we've decided that
`process.nextTick` inside constructors is not something we want to keep
as it creates side effects from creating objects. Instead this PR
proposes a more explicit approach.

In this PR I integrate the Unleash React SDK with the Admin UI.
We also take advantage of Unleash Hosted Edge behind the scenes with
multiple regions to get the evaluations close to the end user.
This is exposing information we already have about permissions in a UI
that should help users have an overview of the permissions of a user
with regards to projects and environments
This test was flaky once an hour because subminutes 3 made it fall into
the wrong bucket when tests were run exactly or minutes after the our
had passed.
Also, the databases created were created with the system clock. I
altered it to be explicitly UTC.
## About the changes
SCIM provisioned users ended up without a root role. Unleash was
assigning them the Viewer role by code but some queries using the db to
resolve the role did not have the same logic leading to weird behaviors.
This amends the situation by assigning the Viewer role to those users
following the least privilege principle.
Also adds a warning when assuming the Viewer role. That should never
happen but we want to be confident before removing it.

As part of preparation for ESM and node/TSC updates, this PR will make
Unleash build with strictNullChecks set to true, since that's what's in
our tsconfig file. Hence, this PR also removes the `--strictNullChecks
false` flag in our compile tasks in package.json.

features :)
Changes to migration file -

1. Fixes the migration script where features table is updated with
archived_at column with the latest date instead of taking the date from
the events table.
2. Also it fails for the latest toggle which was archived and then
revived but after migration it updates the toggle as archived toggle.
3. Also because of the buggy reference to the outer join's events table
`e` its taking a huge time to run the migration.
This PR fixes all the above issues.
## About the changes
We have faced an issue during migration of unleash-server from 4.8.2 to
6.6.0 where one of our toggle which was archived and unarchived once
before migration and that was the latest toggle in terms of the archived
date, but after the migration was ran it was in archived status.
Upon further debugging and running the SQL command in the features table
migration file we noticed that we should not be referencing the outer
join's events table `e` for the feature_name check and additionally we
should add the features table's archived toggle check instead.

## About the changes
Some automation may keep some data up-to-date (e.g. segments). These
updates sometimes don't generate changes but we're still storing these
events in the event log and triggering reactions to those events.
Arguably, this could be done in each service domain logic, but it seems
to be a pretty straightforward solution: if preData and data are
provided, it means some change happened. Other events that don't have
preData or don't have data are treated as before.
Tests were added to validate we don't break other events.
When project is moved, then Unleash creates only one event, which is for
target project.
We also need one for source project, to know that project was moved out
of it.
Test will be in enterprise repo.
This fixes a problem where the yggdrasil-engine does not send the
correct value for bucket.start. In practice clients sends metrics every
60s and it does not matter if we use start or the stop timestamp to
resolve the nearest full hour.
Currently, in enterprise we're struggling with setting service and
transactionality; all our verfications says that the setting key is not
present, so setting-store happily tries to insert a new row with a new
PK. However, somehow at the same time, the key already exists. This
commit adds conflict handling to the insertNewRow.
Fixes the height discrepancy between add strategy and more strategies
buttons, both with and without the flag enabled.
The essence of the fix is to make the "more strategies" button's height
dynamic and grow to match the height of the other button.

If you're very sharp-eyed, you might notice a few things:
1. There's more padding on the new button. This was done in concert with
UX when we noticed there was more padding on other buttons. So as a
result, we set the button type to the default instead of "small".
1. The kebab button isn't perfectly square with the flag on. There's a
few issues here, but essentially: to use `aspect-ratio: 1`, you need
either a height or a width set. Because we want everything here to be
auto-generated (use the button's intrinsic height), I couldn't make it
work. In the end, I think this is close enough. If you have other ideas,
you're very welcome to try and fix it.
## About the changes
Based on the first hypothesis from
https://github.com/Unleash/unleash/pull/9264, I decided to find an
alternative way of initializing the DB, mainly trying to run migrations
only once and removing that from the actual test run.
I found in [Postgres template
databases](https://www.postgresql.org/docs/current/manage-ag-templatedbs.html)
an interesting option in combination with jest global initializer.
### Changes on how we use DBs for testing
Previously, we were relying on a single DB with multiple schemas to
isolate tests, but each schema was empty and required migrations or
custom DB initialization scripts.
With this method, we don't need to use different schema names
(apparently there's no templating for schemas), and we can use new
databases. We can also eliminate custom initialization code.
### Legacy tests
This method also highlighted some wrong assumptions in existing tests.
One example is the existence of `default` environment, that because of
being deprecated is no longer available, but because tests are creating
the expected db state manually, they were not updated to match the
existing db state.
To keep tests running green, I've added a configuration to use the
`legacy` test setup (24 tests). By migrating these, we'll speed up
tests, but the code of these tests has to be modified, so I leave this
for another PR.
## Downsides
1. The template db initialization happens at the beginning of any test,
so local development may suffer from slower unit tests. As a workaround
we could define an environment variable to disable the db migration
2. Proliferation of test dbs. In ephemeral environments, this is not a
problem, but for local development we should clean up from time to time.
There's the possibility of cleaning up test dbs using the db name as a
pattern:

1. It allows us migrate only once and still get the benefits of having a
well known state for tests.
3. It removes some of the custom setup for tests (which in some cases

Adds a killswitch called "filterExistingFlagNames". When enabled it will
filter out reported SDK metrics and remove all reported metrics for
names that does not match an exiting feature flag in Unleash.
This have proven critical in the rare case of an SDK that start sending
random flag-names back to unleash, and thus filling up the database. At
some point the database will start slowing down due to the noisy data.
In order to not resolve the flagNames all the time we have added a small
cache (10s) for feature flag names. This gives a small delay (10s) from
flag is created until we start allow metrics for the flag when
kill-switch is enabled. We should probably listen to the event-stream
and use that invalidate the cache when a flag is created.
## About the changes
Validations in the constructor were executed on the way out (i.e. when
reading users). Instead we should validate when we insert the users.
We're also relaxing the email validation to support top domain emails
(e.g. `...@jp`)
